64 Installing Swift64
Compared with conventional radio, satellite communications is
a complex process demanding the successful interworking of several
systems in space,
in the air and on the ground. The installation, approval
and activation of new satellite equipment in aircraft are governed
by Inmarsat rules designed to ensure that performance meets specification
and that there are no undesirable effects on the Inmarsat system
and other users. Swift64 installation work will be subject to
procedures tried and tested on a wide range of airframes and equipment
since the early 1990s.
Because Swift64 was designed with the needs of existing users
in mind, the avionics units will work through the high-gain antennas
already installed on large numbers of airliners and corporate
aircraft to support Aero H services. This will yield significant
savings for current Aero H users upgrading to Swift64 by minimizing
installation time and aircraft downtime.
Experience
with Inmarsat's earlier very successful aeronautical services
indicates that Swift64 will be retrofitted to existing aircraft
and, increasingly, specified by operators buying new aircraft
or installed as standard by the airframe manufacturers.
